Spray Dried Plasma

FrontlineODP™
On Demand Plasma

Our Spray dried plasma unit the FrontlineODP™ (On Demand Plasma) is designed for rapid rehydration, intended to support the management of traumatic hemorrhage in situations where conventional plasma is unavailable or impractical. This includes pre-hospital transfusions, rural and austere healthcare settings, and military applications.

A spray dried plasma solution will potentially allow for new methods of blood product distribution throughout the EMT community. The potential longevity of Spray Dried Plasma means that emergency vehicles may be able to carry this product for longer than whole blood or other alternatives without replenishing as often.

In addition, as spray dried plasma is being designed to be stored in ambient conditions, it has the potential to save more lives, especially where emergency vehicles do not have appropriate refrigerated facilities but could provide ambient controlled temperature storage conditions.

FrontlineODP™ Unique Features

Rehydration in 2.5 minutes
Comparable Factor Activity
Ultra Lightweight PVC Bag
24 Months Shelf Life

The FrontlineODP™ unit is easily rehydrated in two and a half minutes with 200ml of sterile water (SWFI), making it practical in prehospital and hospital settings (i.e. rural) where fresh plasma is unavailable.

Pre treatment Process

Plasma is pre-treated in a sterile, non-pyrogenic, single-use Plasma Pretreatment Container.  The pre-treated plasma is then transferred, to the Plasma Drying Chamber.

Drying Process

The Frontline Dryer is an instrument that controls and facilitates the spray drying process through a fully automated process. During the process plasma is atomized by a specially engineered nozzle and then rapidly dried by the addition of hot air. The resulting dry plasma is collected in a specialized filtered pouch within the plasma drying chamber.

Seal, Separate & Package Process

The Plasma Drying Chamber is then placed into the Frontline Sealer which consolidates (in two automated steps) the dried plasma powder into the final bag. The FrontlineODP™Unit is then placed in a sealable protective package designed to maintain a low moisture environment for storage.

Why is it needed?

Severe bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death after traumatic injury. When minutes matter, early plasma administration has been shown to save lives.*

Despite this, 30–40% of deaths from bleeding are considered preventable. In the United States alone, more than 30,000 people die each year from bleeding that might have been stopped. Globally, that number rises to over 100,000 preventable deaths every year.*

The need for plasma in emergencies is not new. During World War II, over 10 million units of dried plasma were produced to support lifesaving care. Today, global production capacity is less than 50,000 units annually — far below what is needed to protect both civilian and military patients.

Conventional Plasma FFP/PF24

  • Cold Chain requirements for frozen storage and transport
  • Long thawing times (30 minutes)
  • High breakage rates

Lyophilized Plasma

  • Glass bottles – bulky, not flexible/ compressible
  • Prone to breakage
  • Weeks to manufacture and release
There is a clear and urgent need for portable, easily stored and easy to use plasma to bring lifesaving treatment closer to the point of injury.
